They didn't do this for her confidence they did it for ratings and there have been way younger girls who wore way more makeup and nothing was said about it. They singled her out and to deprive someone of this kind of opportunity because of her eyeliner is deplorable. No... that's an overly sensitive way to take it IMO...where what he actually said is being laced with interpretation instead of what was literally communicated. He said was that he feels like she's trying too hard to already have this high glamour pop star image, and he wanted her to take off her mask so they could get a chance to meet the real her underneath all that high glamour war paint. That's it. he wanted to be able to see her eyes, connect with her as she performs. That's it. No one said she was awful and wouldn't make it with her previous choice of image at all or that she would be reprimanded or disqualified if she didn't. It's really not as harsh as people are making it seem to be. At least that's my take on it. Do with it what you will, lol.

There's a lot of sub context in this conversation that a lot of you seem to be missing. Allow me to explain: The way a person is dressed CAN in fact influence their behaviour. Particularly with teenagers, who don't really know who they are yet; the difference in how they act when wearing makeup, versus when NOT wearing it, can be quite big. Most people don't even notice that they do it, because it's entirely subconscious. But wearing makeup or being dressed a certain way DOES influence the way you feel about yourself, which can then influence ANYTHING about you. Simon wanted her to take her makeup off because she was HIDING behind it. She didn't feel confident enough that her voice would carry her through, so she was hiding behind this superstar persona. And the makeup was part of that. The problem being, you can usually TELL when someone isn't confident in themselves. Simon picked up on that almost instantly. By making her take the makeup off, Simon was effectively forcing her to focus entirely on her voice. She didn't HAVE anything else. She couldn't cruise through by looking good; she HAD to get through on her own merits alone. Making someone feel open and vulnerable is often the best way to get their BEST work out of them. To get them to try their absolute hardest. That's what he was doing. He wanted her to stop hiding behind this persona she had, hoping that would carry her through, and instead do the work to get herself there. He wanted to see whether the REAL her had what it took.

It actually CAN though. Makeup changes how you see yourself, which can then change the way you carry yourself, the way you speak, etc. This girl's seventeen. She wasn't just wearing makeup, she was HIDING behind it. Simon took that barrier away, which forced her to put all her effort into her VOICE. She didn't have anything else to carry her through. No stage presence, no superstar look, JUST her voice. That by itself is enough to make a person try harder.

I am a person who usually appreciates Simon's criticism when it comes to where the talent is, and I've always enjoyed the truth he gives. I also understand that he thinks make-up is instantly "a mask". But, you can obviously tell that she was hurt by his words. "Take all the make--up off" and "Come with a pair of jeans" saying to show her "true" self. But he doesn't understand that it was HER choice to put her make-up on, HER choice to wear short shirts. And that Simon wasn't telling her to "be herself", but to be what HE sees as a person. A persons choice of make-up and clothing reflects their own selves, yet Simon was too close-minded to see that. She has the right to wear what she wants under the circumstances seeing that it isn't illegal. And it is also very likely that she does not use make-up as a mask, but as art and/or SELF-EXPRESSION. The exact thing he is shaming her for. I for one use make-up as an art form, as if painting a live mural. For once, Simon's judgement seems to be wrong and I hope he knows that now or soon.

Simon said she should remove her makeup, but she could have said no. No one was forced to do anything. I think it was very wise of him to ask that and it really did make a big difference. The important thing was her voice and she was a little too focused on trying to be someone else, and that's why he asked her to be herself without the mask. Simon is kinder than most people think x3

she can do however much makeup she wants, idc, but she's STUNNING without it. she looks totally different and I'd kill to look like that.

Rena's Glamour I was just saying that the title of the video was "forced to take make up off" which I thought was deceiving because she wasn't forced to do anything she was asked, also it made it seem like she was going to be bare faced. Nothing wrong with a girl who likes her make up ( heaven knows I do) I thought she looked pretty with the more subtle make up. But I didn't like how after Simon bullied her into changing her look they acted like it was her idea all along. Ultimately it was her choice. However, I think the brave thing would have been to stand up for yourself, she apparently liked her original look (other wise she wouldn't have been wearing it in the first place) so why cave? She did look older, but who cares how she looks (she looked fine) her voice is amazing.

No one should have any say of how much make up someone is wearing, especially a man who doesn't in fact wear make up nor understand it. She is beautiful with out makeup but he has no say in what she wears.

Which has WHAT relevance? If you're saying SIMON'S appearance changes anything, you're literally just proving his point. If his appearance makes a difference to you, clearly appearances DO matter. Which is exactly why he told her to take her makeup off.

1) oh my god, people bite their lips for HUNDREDS of reasons. Stop reading into it. It doesn't mean anything. 2) Pay attention to more than just the FIRST, most literal interpretation of what you're seeing, maybe? Then I wouldn't have to explain this shit to you. 3) Yes, makeup CAN influence the way your voice sounds. It's a well known psychological fact that dressing a certain way affects the way you see yourself and thus, the way you act. This can carry over to your voice. THIS IS WHAT SIMON MEANT. This girl's a teenager, and full of insecurities. She was handling those insecurities by hiding behind a persona - and as long as she was doing that, she was NEVER going to be successful. He was helping her, not being mean. 4) I hope you guys realise you don't GET to choose how you look when you work in the pop industry. He's setting her up for what her life is GOING to be like if she ever manages to accomplish her dream. Most celebrities don't get to pick what they wear or how they do their makeup. That goes for Simon too, fyi. He likely did not dress himself for this scene. The show's wardrobe department did, just like with all the other judges. 5) This girl's makeup did not suit her at ALL anyway. It made her eyes look way smaller, her face look rounder, etc. She does not know how to flatter her own face. She looked a million times better without it.

The makeup was not over done, but there is no doubt she is even more beautiful without it
