You can do it differently however it must be equally skillful and entertaining. An example is Lana Del Ray. No way she could imitate Whitney but she has a powerful style.

As Simon said Whitney had this glow about her, so does this lady.

What a beautiful lady with an equally beautiful voice. She was very nervous and it affected her on some of the harder, high notes. Whitney Houston's voice by her own words was a gift from God. She grew up singing in the church. Her voice was effortless and those notes she sang came out like honey pouring forth from a jar. I have heard nobody that can completely imitate Whitney so that you think when you close your eyes it is her. This lady has her own voice and own talent.

Way before Glennis, I already saw Belinda's videos singing Whitney Houston songs. Before she started her career, as I remembered, she has no musical background ( no musical instrument ability).
