If I recall correctly, he supplemented his income while playing in the NFL by painting portraits for his teammates - and eventually other teams, too. He’s also an Interlochen graduate: it’s a pretty incredible arts school in northern Michigan. When I found out he went there, it was more of a “that explains a lot” moment than anything. Seriously, how can you not love this man?

Their judges are so entitled as well. Remember that time that baggage handler came on the show and sang and Demi Lovato tried to say everyone works as hard or harder as him, and the guy said “I don’t use auto tune like you do?” Love when judges get what they deserve. And then Britney Soears was acting all entitled as well that time. He should’ve of replied to her, “who let you out of rehab?”

I remember being in elementary school and being embarrassed that I played the flute until I read in a magazine that Terry plays and my whole idea on it changed. I’m just stoked to see that little known fact come to light all these years later. I also laughed pretty hard when he walked out shirtless and realized Simon was leaving. He was ready to convince the man 😂

I usually don't mind Simon, in fact I think he makes a lot of sense most of the time, but for an actual music producer to question the legitimacy of flutes and why they exist is beyond ridiculous. The flute is literally the oldest identifiable instrument in all of human history, with examples of them dating back over 30,000 years. It would be like if custom car maker didn't know what the point of tires was....

@@bobbynadeau664 Don't want to disrespect the contestants, but they have trouble producing a full sound and good vibrato. If you listen to more experienced flutists in solo, it sounds as good as any other instrument. It is very difficult to master the sound of the flute but most people think that it's just blowing in a pipe when in reality there is much more to it.

@@DeathnoteBB To me, his concern seemed more angled toward the marketability of flute music outside of orchestral ensembles then disparaging of the flute as a musical instrument. The flute has a very specific sound profile that does not lend itself easily to many genres of music, it would be difficult to nearly impossible to arrange a show around it as a solo instrument without ensemble support. The only reason Lindsay Sterling did as well as she did was because the violin is a much more versatile instrument with a broader sound profile and she combined her music with ballet inspired dancing to match her music.

My guess is that Simon has NEVER heard of Jethro Tull? Ian Anderson’s flute playing is one of the BIGGEST reasons people come to their shows. Heck, they released a new album just this year called Zealot Gene, AND Ian’s been performing constantly for the past 20 someodd years (dude is INSANELY talented).

Hopefully it is just an act and scripted and he truly doesn't feel this way for flutists', cuz I feel that no matter how strange or annoying an instrument may be or sound, they should all be respected along with the people who play it, coming from a clarinetist

I LOVE the flute . I used to pick fights with my sister so I could listen to her play from the other room , as she always played when upset . She passed away and flute is still one of the most beautiful sounds to me 💯

I played flute for 10 years and I miss it so bad. I literally gave up and pawned it because I thought it wasnt worth following the dream. I love so much how how these people are trying to bring it to light and show how beautiful the flute truly is. Playing the instrument is like singing our emotions and thoughts. The echo of the flute on the walls or off the trees is so healing.

Terry Crews is extremely talented and in my opinion one of the most underrated/under utilized comedy actors in Hollywood.

It's unfair for him to use his personal bias against the instrument to judge the person as a professional what he should have done was put his personal bias aside and judge them according to their talents because to me it seems like a very unprofessional move to bring personal biases into the playing field. Talent is talent

Perhaps Simon has forgotten the band Jethro Tull? Ian Anderson makes that band. The way he twirls and tosses, then catches the flute! And he hits the next note without missing a beat. One of the best concert's I've seen. Very impressive.

And as "bgrgrh" said, in other words, he is well educated not just for his needs but as well for others. With THAT, he likes to make himself a fool because he has the confidence in him. He learned not to step on others, because he would step on himself first for that to happen.

The flute is also known as one of the hardest instruments to play and uses as much air to play as a tuba.

Never knew Terry could play that instrument. That's awesome.

Terry crew is the real deal. Genuinely awesome person.

Kid like Simon knows nothing about how beautiful flute is. The sound of flute is one of the most beautiful sound ever created on this world. It's like drinking coffee, you won't appreciate the taste of it if you don't know the benefits of it.

Agreed however it also requires alot of skill to be played properly, any mistake on the flute is easily noticeable and ruins the song, thought the video was funny however the flute skills were not that great

Agree. But these flutes they carried were worse. Nothing like the sweet sound wooden flutes create.

My daughter is in fourth grade and just learning how to play the flute. The flute is one of the hardest instruments to play and to get those sounds out of it. So the fact that she did that so well up there on stage, all them did including Terry, I give them a lot of credit because this instrument is difficult to play.

Oddly, it was the only instrument I COULD play! Being left-handed, all the strings were awkward for me. I couldn't handle reeds. I'd been "playing" soda bottles most of my life, though.

The flute is the 6th hardest instrument to learn, piano is harder because more songs and sounds being made

This is one of my favorite AGT moments ever, when I saw this live me and my mom were laughing so hard.

Terry's a very cool dude so supportive and this was one of the most bizarrely funny moments I ever witnessed on this show.

the flute is actually featured in quite a few hip hop albums. in Spain I saw a BreakDancer do a street performance and the music was just a guy playing a flute. Simon Cowell is a huge blister in the world of music and a malcontent. He doesn't know what he talking about. Go Terry Crews! That girl did an amazing performance.

The flute is one of those instruments that sounds best in a group or with other instruments, but Terry Crews got the charisma to make it work 😂

In my opinion the flute is a great instrument, and there's a lot of great songs with them. I agree that I wouldn't listen to a strictly flute album, but they complement a lot of other instruments. Soul and rock music had great songs with woodwinds. The way they're used is definitely very important, though. They sound great along side brass and guitars.

people are not applauding Simon. these style of daytme tv shows are rapidly losing viewers as they're the riddled with commercials and annoying filler. so Simon makes a paycheck for deliberately playing up the villain character any opportunity he gets just to garner attention. its hardly about the contestants, it's about the egos and big paychecks of the judge panel.

"Can't think of anyone who would buy a flute record ever." Dude if you've never heard of Jethro Tull, you have no business judging a music competition.

Funny that you mention weebs and games. Flute and woodwinds in general are almost essential in many Eastern/Asian music. It might be not as popular in Western hemisphere but it's loved very much in multiple cultures all across Asia, permeating even into their pop culture like games and animation/films.
